A bronze figure of the Crouching Venus
France, circa 1700

The wringing of her hair derives from Apelles’ lost masterwork and this depiction of the classical goddess of love and beauty was taken up again in the 15th century - through the desire of Renaissance artists and sculptors reading Pliny to emulate Apelles, and if possible, to outdo him.

The figure 17cm high and 26.5cm high overall.
